Social Security Disability Insurance for a Special Needs Adult Child

What is Social Security Disability Insurance?

The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program will pay benefits to you and certain family members if you are “insured.” Being insured means that you have worked long enough as well as recently enough and that you paid Social Security taxes on your earnings.

You can apply for this program using your computer, calling by phone, or doing so in person and the steps include:

  • Reviewing the Adult Disability Checklist which will help you gather the documents that you need when applying.
  • Reviewing your application to make sure it meets the basic requirements for disability benefits.
  • Waiting for your state agency to make the disability determination once you submit your application.
