The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs are the largest federal programs that give financial support to individuals with disabilities. The Social Security Administration oversees both programs and only individuals who have a disability and meet medical criteria may qualify for benefits under either program. As a spouse, you can claim a Social Security benefit based on your own earnings record, or collect a spousal benefit in the amount of 50% of your spouse’s Social Security benefit, but not both. Read Social Security Spousal Benefits for more information on spousal benefits.
