What Is The BENES Act And Why Is It Important?

December 8, 2020

The Beneficiary Enrollment Notification & Eligibility Simplification Act (BENES Act), a House Appropriations Bill, was passed. It is important, because the changes will impact seniors on Medicare. BENES Act provisions improve Medicare enrollment education outreach to beneficiaries, reduces gaps in coverage and eases the enrollment process.

The BENES act creates a notification system for individuals between the ages of 60 and 64.  Information highlighting Medicare Part B eligibility and the possibility of late enrollment penalties will be posted on the websites of Social Security, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the Department of Health and Human Services.  Additionally, a notice is to be mailed to individuals at least twice in the three months prior to their enrollment period at age 65.
